Driving down a highway at night can be great, it is very relaxing, but sometimes those road markings are just not visible enough.
Daan Roosegaarde and Dutch engineering firm Heijmans Infrastructure have designed and developed the highway of the future, using a special photo-luminescent powder, they were able to create a paint that "recharges" through the daytime and releases a green glow at night.
If the glow can remain active for 8 or more hours at night, it could theoretically replace electric based light sources and therefore saving millions in power costs.
The "Smart Highway" concept was first proposed in 2012.
The first use of this technology exists on the N329 highway is Oss, approx. 100 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The trial will be monitored closely, however one of the major concerns is how well the technology will work in the winter.
