A newly discovered planet was announced by scientists at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, documented as "a gassy planet with an Earth-like mass".

The planet KOI-314c is approximately 200 light years away from Earth and orbits a red dwarf star, belonging to a different spectral class.

Planet KOI-314c has a complete orbit in only 23 Earth days and its proximity to the star puts the surface temperature at around 104 degrees celcius. The size of the planet is around 60% larger in scale but very similar in mass.

The mass of the planet was determined using a new method called "transit timing variations" which has been only in use since 2010. Astronomers are confident that it provides an accurate measurement of low-mass planets.
