Rovio, the company behind Angry Birds met an unwelcoming message on their website after a hacker was able to deface the website with a spoof image showing the NSA logo superimposed over one of the Angry Birds and the title "Spying Birds".

The defacement followed news of Rovio sharing confidential data from its customers to the NSA and GCHQ.

Rovio insisted they did not collaborate or collude with any government spy agency and stated that if any of the advertisement networks are used for spying purposes, they will re-evaluate working with them.

A twitter account associated with the SEA (Syrian Electronic Army) posted a link to a saved copy of the spoof Angry Birds image along with a message: "A friend hacked and defaced @Angrybirds website after reports confirms its spying on people. The attack was by 'Anti-NSA' Hacker, He sent an email to our official email with the link of the hacked website."

Rovio stated that they detected the defacement and corrected it within a matter of minutes.

"The defacement was caught in minutes and corrected immediately" said Saara Bergstrom - the marketing manager.

If advertising networks are being used for surveillance, then Angry Birds will not be the only affected software, it may be necessary for all companies and developers to start working together to prevent further misuse of the adverts and prevent government agencies from invading their clients’ privacy.

Let us know what you think of the recent spying activity that has been going on, do you think the governments from Great Britain and the USA are going too far?
