Sugar is one of the most consumed substances on earth and in large amounts it can become the ultimate evil.
When your bloodstream contains too much sugar, your body will produce insulin. Insulin is used to drop the blood-sugar level in the body. Rapid changing of sugar-level puts a heavy strain on your body and can lead to diabetes and coronary disease.
Unfortunately, many drinks and processed foods contain high glycaemic index rated sugar. This sugar is absorbed much faster into your bloodstream and will increase the risks that are involved.
Sugar can be found in lots of products in your kitchen, as it is used to help preserve foods, Bread, Jam and Sauce are a few of the common foods that contain "bad" added sugar.
Contrary to what people may tell you, not all sugar is bad; sugar found in fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and whole grain are simple sugars. Natural sugars come packed with vitamins, minerals, proteins and one of the most important being fibre. Fibre decreases the speed at which the sugar is absorbed into the blood.
Remember that, even just a spoonful of added sugar can be detrimental to your health.
On the other hand, neuroscientists have shown data that sugar leads to dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens, an area of the brain that is associated with motivation and innovation.
So the next time you have a can of coke and get the munchies, take count of how much added sugar is inside each of the products, add it up at the end of the day, then leave us a comment with your result.
