Dortmund's Sporting Director Michael Zorc thanked Gündogan, saying, "We would like to thank Ilkay Gündogan for five extraordinary years in Dortmund. BVB would like to wish him a speedy recovery and all the best for his future endeavours in Manchester"((de)).

Gündogan scored four goals in 36 appearances in his debut season for Dortmund when the club won the Bundesliga title as well as DFB-Pokal — the German Cup. Gündogan has played sixteen international matches and scored four goals.
