Re-locating to Mars sounds a little farfetched, but the team at Mars One disagrees. Mars One is a project that plans to re-settle humans on Mars by 2025.

Recent developments from the project are pushing their plans into motion.

Lockheed Martin, the contractors that are building the Orion spacecraft for NASA are also contracted by Mars One to build a satellite by 2018 to be orbited around Mars.

Thinking of applying to live on Mars?

Already over 200,000 applicants have applied from more than 140 countries. Mars One has stated that they have cut the applicant pool by 99.5%, bringing the total down to 1,058 candidates.

It is not apparent as to what the applicants will need to undergo, but the project is in negotiations with media companies for the right to televise the selection process.

Leaving Earth to live on Mars will be an exciting journey, but with everything comes risks, the candidates that are selected will need to overcome mental pressure, their physical needs will be pushed to their limit as food and water will be an extremely valuable resource.

Living in a very small group on an isolated planet may bring negative side-effects, finding oneself feeling confined, lonely and in some cases distress; it is possible that some of the first inhabitants may become detached from reality from the lack of human interaction.

With current technology, will it really be possible by 2025 and is it possible for Mars One to place four humans on Mars to begin colonizing the red planet?
