European Central Bank announced today the new look of the ten euro notes.
In September the new note will replace its predecessor as it should be more difficult to counterfeit. Last year the € 5 banknote passed through the face-lifting procedure and now it's time for the tenner to follow as well as the twenty in 2015.

The Director of ECB Yves Mersch presented on Monday the new banknote, whose sole purpose is to make the Union currency safer.

In order to achieve this aim the ECB has "equipped" the new notes with numerous security features: the watermark and holographic bar will show an image of the mythical Europe, the color of print shall vary from emerald green to dark blue at a different angle. The banknote is knurled on both edges of the front side and is also covered with a special coating, which is slightly thicker on touch. The idea is to make the notes more durable.

See the comparison below:

On September, 23rd this year, the new banknotes will be in circulation and the old ones will be gradually withdrawn. In 2015 ECB is expected to replace the banknotes of 20 and 50 euros. An important condition is to preserve the known design patterns. They represent buildings from various European ages, but they are not based on real structures. The 10 euro note is dedicated to the Roman times and features architectural elements of the age.

The replacement of euro notes is dictated by the negative statistics on their counterfeiting. The German magazine Der Spiegel reports that in 2013 there have been over 670,000 fake euro banknotes seized, which is about 26% more than the previous year. The most frequently counterfeited are the 20 and 50 euro notes, which account for 78% of all seized counterfeit .
