World Migratory Bird Day 2014 was celebrated in over 70 countries on 10-11 May. Since 2006, every second weekend of May, global communities celebrate the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. Festivals, bird watching and other events attract people from around the world to celebrate the days of the migratory birds.
The World Migratory Bird Day is a global event through which bird watchers hope to unite organizations, governments and dedicated people to protect migratory birds for future generations. These events raise public awareness for migratory birds and their importance, as well as connecting groups of people to share, celebrate and learn from each other.
In Bulgaria, Lake Atanasovsko is one of the most important places for birds using the Via Pontica route. Over 200,000 birds from over 30 different species annually pass the lake, some of the most commonly spotted are the Honey Buzzard, Lesser Spotted Eagles, White Storks and Pink Pelicans.
It is important for governments to put into place protected areas that migratory birds often cross, this includes preventing construction of man-made structures, wind turbines and other threats that endanger the many birds that pass through the sky highway twice every year (once in the spring and once in autumn).
